Minimum Requirements for Online Learning

Courses meet online on the Great Plains UMC Online Learning Moodle site and may include online meetings using Adobe Connect where you will connect with your facilitator and colleagues via webcam and VOIP (audio through your computer using headphones and microphone) or telephone.

Please be sure you have the following hardware, software, and skills before your course begins.

Computer hardware

  • An up-to-date computer with sound card and speakers or earphone/headset/microphone jacks
  • Internet service: A broadband or high speed connection is strongly recommended
  • Webcam
  • Microphone and headset

Computer software

  • Up-to-date web browser such as the current version of Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Internet Explorer
  • Java, JavaScript, and cookies must be enabled in your browser
  • Pop-up blocking software may need to be disabled to access some aspects of your Moodle course
  • An email account for sending and receiving email via the Internet, including attachments
  • Word processing software such as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, OpenOffice or another word processing program
  • Microsoft PowerPoint, Keynote, OpenOffice Presentation or similar presentation software
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader for downloading, viewing, saving, and printing PDF files
  • Up-to-date antivirus software

Basic skills

  • Knowledge of your computer's operating system and software
  • Ability to:
    • Use keyboard and mouse
    • Use software applications (web browser, email, word processing, etc.)
    • Manage files and folders (name, save, copy, move, backup, rename, delete)
    • Download and save files from the Internet
    • Send and receive email attachments
    • Install software
    • Run security and virus protection
  • Access to the online environment at least 10 hours per week
  • Strong reading and writing skills
  • Good time management
  • Self-motivated, active learner
